Really confused by these, but definitely going to try them.

[Conclusion] They taste like shit.

Ebelskiver Sunday

A few weeks back I mentioned how I saw these cool pancake balls on the internet. To my surprise, michelle already had the special pan needed to make these treats, so we decided to cook up a batch. We made plain, brown sugar & cinnamon, and nutella fixed versions. They were all a delight and super easy to make.

Grilled Cheese

If you find yourself in Grapevine during happy hour (4:30-7:00) & want a delicious drink, you must stop here. Drinks are on special & they have the best chicken strips. (Yeah, you heard me, chicken strips. They’ve taken a not-so-sophisticated dish & made it an art form. Plus, the basil ranch on the side is a dream.)

We ended up at Mr. Max in a roundabout way, ironically from a mention in a Montreal travel magazine. It was an excellent stroke of luck though. Mr. Max is a little piece of Tokyo. The area is…not so chic (in Irving off of Beltline near the Irving Mall), but inside is cozy. The windows are all covered; the walls lined with menu items in Japanese & signed photos of sports stars who’ve dined there. There’s lots on the menu to try, but we started with tonkatsu curry (one of the dishes we miss most from Tokyo) & yaki soba (a childhood favorite of mine). It was delicious & we’ll definitely be back to this little gem. (The gentleman next to me at the bar had a small fried fish—head, tail & all—that I eyed for next visit.)

Noted by Esquire as one of 2011’s Best New Restaurants in America, Komali had some high points on the menu, like Oaxacan tamales with mole sauce & this tamarind margarita with a spicy salt rim. But while it may be one of the best new restaurants of last year, the existing go-tos in this genre are pretty hard to beat… In fact, the taco we had the next day for lunch at Velvet Taco was pretty damn delicious.

Excellent dinner last night with some friends at Campo in Oak Cliff. It’s amazing there because they brush their bread in duck fat. Also, I had a delicious drink with Buffalo Trace & pear juice. But the beautiful finishing touch? Poundcake with lemon curd & buttermilk ice cream.
