My 5D Camera Birthday Cake

My birthday was last month and to my surprise, my talented friend Teresa and sister Andrea decided to make me a camera cake. I was blown away at how awesome it was. Just look. The detail is amazing, but you probably won’t recognize much unless you are a camera junky like me. Trust me though, everything was spot on and they worked quite hard at putting it together. I can’t give any details on how it was done because I wasn’t allowed anywhere near the kitchen for that entire day, but it sure did taste and look good, so I didn’t care.

[ Yeah, that's a hot-shoe!]

Oh and I’m back. My world travels were an amazing time but it’s also nice to be home and back into a semi-routine. Thanks to Dan for helping out on the picture duties while I was away and speaking of pictures; If you are interested in seeing some from my trip, head over to here:

Welcome back, Brian! I shutter to think how many inches this camera cake will add to your developing waistline!
Thanks foodczar.
What a fun cake! How did it taste?
That is absolutely amazing!
The cake itself was very delicious. I’m not a big fan of frosting though, so I ate my piece like a grapefruit:)
My husband’s b’day is coming up in Sept and I’m contemplating baking a camera cake for him. He also has a Canon EOS 5D; I was wondering if your sister can share the dimensions of the base cake and how she put it together. Thanks!
Jenny Choo, This cake was sculpted using one 8×8 cake and extra cake baked in a small loaf pan. The 8xx8 was cut in half into two 8×4 pieces and stacked with icing in between (not too much!) to seal them together. Then you sculpt the cake with a very sharp knife to the basic shape you need. Don’t worry about small shaping (you can add that later with fondant). Seal the cake with frosting (very thin layer) and add pices of fondant anywhere you want shaping that the cake won’t provide (like a large lump). Cover the cake in fondant and smooth the surface (our cake was a bit bumpy as we didn’t have a smoother). Then cut the smaller cake (the loaf size) for other pieces like the lens, and frost and seal in fondant. Then asemble the pieces and add detail with more fondant. If you need help check out Debbie Brown’s books on cakes as her recipes and techniques are easy and always turn out great! Have fun!
