Cloud Cakes @ Dream Cafe

So I’m more of a French Toast kind of guy. In the coming months I’m going to go on a ‘Best French Toast’ in Dallas tirade, so keep your eye out. My affinity towards the Toast stems from my earlier years. When I was a kid, my family and I would always go out to eat every Sunday after church and I would always get french toast for my meal. I loved it. So growing up, pancakes were never really on my radar, or my plate. I mean, my mother would make them every so often, but If I could do anything about it, it was gonna be french toast.

Anyway, to my surprise, Dream Cafe has some damn fine pancakes. They would like you to call them Cloud Cakes, and befittingly so because they are the lightest and fluffiest cakes I have ever had in my mouth. The secret ingredient that makes them so light and delicious you may ask….Ricotta cheese. These pancakes are perfect. Not quite French Toast conquering perfect, but despite their 10$ price tag, they are quite a delightful breakfast. That’s right, 10 dollars. 5 dollars a cake. Someone is ripping off someone here, and I’d like to say it wasn’t me. I’m not sure where they get off charging 10$ for two pancakes at a normal looking cafe-type location in Dallas, but I guess if people are willing pay it, they will keep charging it. So if it wasn’t for the high price tag, I might be heading back to the Dream Cafe more often to fill up on come Cloud Cakes. Although as it stands, my Sunday mid-afternoon hunger will still be quenched with some moderately priced but delicious french toast….or maybe even some migas.

$10 for two pancakes? You’re right, that’s too much. Sounds like you’re speaking my language, Brian. Quality AND Value! Question: You mention you also like migas. What place in Dallas or surrounding suburbs can you recommend that has great migas for cheap?

  • Well I really like Cafe Brazil’s Migas. They serve them day or night, which is a real bonus for me and they are probably about 7$ and come on a giant plate. The Meridian Room also serves some damn fine Migas for about the same price, but are only serving them on Sundays for brunch. I’ll make sure to branch out a little more on the migas and see what I can find. Any suggestions from you?

  • Unfortunately, my friend, most places that I know serve good migas serve them only at Sunday brunch like Cantino Laredo, and are usually overpriced to boot. But, I’ll keep my eyes open.

  • As much as I love Cafe Brazil they have been very hit or miss for me the last few times. But I will be more than willing to try some 10 dollar cakes. Best ones I have had so far were at the Original Pancake House off of Central.
nice pics, loving the blog so far.

  • very valid point about cafe brazil being hit or miss. i’ve definitely experienced that the past couple of times, but it’s been more about the service than the food. the lower greenville and mockingbird locations have always done me good with their migas. now the wait required to get them… that’s a whole other story ;)

p.s. also, i will say that cloud cakes are amazing and worth getting despite their $$ status. it’s strange too, because this price tag doesn’t reflect the overall price range of Dream Cafe. It seems to me to be quite reasonable in everything else.

  • OK, enough about the migas(?)…those pancakes look delicious, and again another place my son Brian will have to take me when I return!

  • i’ve had these too! they are delicious… and although expensive, they’re a whole lot of pancake (not just 2 regular size pancakes i say…).

they really are fabulously fluffy, and the fresh strawberries are a perfect complement :)

  • Since when do you eat Migas Brian? My mom makes that shit homemade and you’ve never once mentioned them. Way to blow it. Although I’m with you on French Toast over Pancakes. Also attributed to my mother.

  • What the hell are Migas???

And P.S. I dont like pancakes, but those look damn good.

  • Migas are basically egg scrambled mixed with salsa and cilantro i guess and what ever else you got in the kitchen, oh and tortilla strips. I just to have them with no meat but now everybody seems to do them with some kind of meat, chorizo, sausage, turkey, baby..ok not baby but all kinds of stuff. they serve them with tortillas i like them with just tortilla chips on the side or like a dip. If im ever gonna have beer with “breakfast” its while im eating migas. damn im hungry now

  • i lived in dallas for 6 years and visited dream cafe a few times – it was just a few blocks from my apartment. however, i don’t recall ever eating their breakfast. and if the price was $10 for 2 pancakes back then, that’s probably why. :-P

breadwinners was a good breakfast/brunch spot. as well as snuffer’s – after a hangover anyway. ;-)

not sure how i stumbled across your blog, but i plan to stop back by. i live a couple hours outside of dallas and make it to the city every now and then.

  • susan,

thanks! breadwinners is also a fav. of mine :) they have delicious french toast!

  • I’m with andrea… I have NEVER heard of a migas..? Anyway, I have been craving pancakes lately because every time i am dragged to look at dvds I always see the “Dan in Real Life” dvd with steve carrell laying on a huge stack. mmmmm… this just added to the crave. I think I’m going to have to make some.

  • [...] out to be the best $6.95 I have ever spent on breakfast. I continually go back to our review of the $10 Dream Cafe pancakes and am baffled at how they get away at charging such a price in a mediocre cafe type setting. [...]
